Among them is a Russian Olympic gold medalist, Evgeny Phyulushchenk. The 30-year-old man is a title holder of several world and European figure skating championships.

He has become popular among the Korean people for his distinguished performance last year.

In an interview with KCNA on Wednesday, he said he was pleased to attend the current festival.

"Not only the Koreans but other people around the world were saddened by the death of leader Kim Jong Il. I wish the Korean people every success in their efforts to implement his behests," he said. "It is beyond doubt that the current festival would bear fruits as the preparations were made in a creditable manner, and with accomplished figure skaters from various countries attending."

"Although I am not in good condition from a recent bruise, I came here, Pyongyang," he added.

He expressed his will to continue to participate in the coming festivals.
