The 23rd Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) was held in Paramaribo, Suriname's capital. Member countries agreed that regional security remains a top priority. The meeting called on participants to continue to contribute the necessary resources and devise creative means to facilitating the region's security framework and management. Also stressed at the meeting was the importance for the CARICOM member states to increase their own capability to explore resources and lessen the dependence on foreign aids. As for economic cooperation, participants agreed to establish a regional commercial enterprise to invest in the exploration of the region's natural resources. Participants also approved the "Implementation Plan for the Regional Framework for Achieving Development Resilient to Climate Change," a blueprint that defines the region's strategic approach to cope with climate change from 2011 to 2021. Barbados expected to receive the benefits of natural gas supplied from Trinidad and Tobago with the construction of a 300-kilometer natural gas pipeline between the two countries. CARICOM has protected the interests of the regional countries and steadily pushed forward the work for developing national economy through economic cooperation among member nations while standing against all sorts of domination moves of foreign forces. The regional countries are working hard to strengthen political cooperation with other Latin American countries and socio-economic cooperation among them which aspire after self-supporting development on the principle of independence against imperialism. And at the meeting of ministries of Energy they defined regional oil price and made an energy policy for guaranteeing the security of its supply in coping with the worldwide oil price uprising. |
