Sixth WPK Congress Solves Issue of Continuity of Leadership

Pyongyang, April 5 (KCNA) -- The 6th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea was convened in Pyongyang from October 10 to 14, Juche 69 (1980).

The congress reelected President Kim Il Sung general secretary of the WPK Central Committee and elected leader Kim Jong Il Presidium member of the Political Bureau of the C.C., WPK, member of the WPK Central Military Commission and secretary of the C.C., WPK, in accordance with the unanimous will of the party members and all other people of the DPRK.

The election marked a milestone in the contemporary history of Korea.

Kim Jong Il devoted his all to carrying into practice the President's idea.

He started to carry on the Songun (military-first) leadership with his field guidance to a tank unit of the Korean People's Army (KPA) on August 25, 1960.

Studying at Kim Il Sung University from September that year, he cultivated the personality and qualifications befitting people's leader.

Working at the Central Committee of the WPK from June 1964, he paid deep attention to developing the WPK into a party firmly united on the basis of the monolithic ideological system.

In particular, he strengthened the KPA into an invincible one.

A master of ideology and theory, he enriched the Juche idea, the Songun idea, fathered by the President, making it a guiding idea in the era of independence.

In the early 1970s, he initiated and led the 70-day campaign for socialist economic construction and personally guided the literature and art field, ushering in the heyday of the Juche-oriented art.

He made an enormous contribution to the human cause of independence, enjoying deep reverence from the world's progressives as a peerlessly veteran statesman.

At the historic 6th WPK Congress, he was elected leader of the revolutionary cause to successfully solve the issue of continuity of leadership in the DPRK.
