Pyongyang, April 7 (KCNA) -- In the 1970s, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea successfully fulfilled the grand economic plan set forth at the Fifth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea.

On the basis of the achievements, President Kim Il Sung put forward a major socialist economic task for the 1980s at the WPK's Sixth Congress in October Juche 69 (1980).

After the Sixth Congress, the President inspired all the people to create a new speed in socialist construction in the 1980s.

With emphasis on nonferrous metal industry, he paid particular attention to increasing production of mineral ores in Tanchon area, choosing it as a frontrunner in creating the 80's Speed.

The campaign for creating the new speed had swept throughout the country. The 8 kilometer-long West Sea Barrage was built in less than five years, 10 000 ton-press and 6 000 cubic meter-oxygen separator were manufactured, which largely helped improve the technical equipment of local industry.

The Second Seven-Year Plan was fulfilled in 1984, with total industrial output value increasing 2.2 times and the per capita income 1.8 times during the period.

Afterwards, the President appealed to the people to implement the Third Seven-Year Plan in order to provide solid material and technical foundations suitable to the complete victory of socialism.

In the late 1980s, he guided the 200-day campaign two times, one before and the other after the DPRK's 40th birthday to bring about a great upsurge in all economic fields and construction.

During the period, electronic and automatic industry was put on a modern basis, with many industrial establishments and power stations built or rebuilt on an expansion basis.

The Hyesan-Manpho Youth Railway was constructed and many railways were switched to electric traction, while agricultural output boosted remarkably.

All the achievements have served as a basis for successfully accomplishing the socialist cause in Korea.
