DPRK's Western Coastal Area Plagued with Drought

Pyongyang, June 12 (KCNA) -- The western coastal area of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has been seriously affected by lingering drought starting in late April. In June over 20 mm rainfall was witnessed in the eastern coastal area of the country, except Kosan and Thongchon plains in Kangwon Province, but less than 10 mm in some parts of Pyongyang and Nampho cities, South Phyongan and South and North Hwanghae provinces. From June 1 to 5, 20 mm rainfall was registered in the northern part of the western coastal area and inland area of Jagang Province, with no rain in the areas south of the central part of the country and the eastern coastal area. On June 10-11, it rained over 20 mm in the northern part of the western coastal area, some parts of the northern inland area and the eastern coastal area only. There was little rainfall in the flat areas in the central part of the west coast, including Pyongyang, Onchon, Unryul, Jaeryong and Yonbaek plains. There has been no rainfall from late April in Kangnam County in Pyongyang City, Anak County in South Hwanghae Province, Songrim City and Junghwa County in North Hwanghae Province, Ryonggang County and Kangso District in Nampho City and Unchon County in South Hwanghae Province. In this period 1 to 5 mm rainfalls were reported in some parts of Pyongyang City, South Phyongan Province and North and South Hwanghae provinces, the lowest for Pyongyang City in 105 years. The long spell of drought is attributable to the protrusion of high pressure from the East Sea of Korea and Okhotsk Sea staying in the air above the central part of Korea, preventing low pressure from passing through the central part. A little amount of rain is expected in the western coastal area on June 14-15, with drought likely to last until June 20. |
