He provided the historic Pyongyang summits for the first time in the history of the Korean nation's division, thus seeing to it that the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration based on the spirit of "By our nation itself" were adopted. These were events of special significance as they ushered in the new era of independent reunification.

He saw through the nature of the complicated situation with clairvoyant insight. Holding higher the banner of Songun, he shattered every move of the separatist forces at home and abroad and provided a firm guarantee for the advance of the era of independent reunification.
