Rodong Sinmun Discloses Inequality of SOFA

Pyongyang, July 9 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun Monday carries a bylined article on the lapse of 46 years since the fabrication of the humiliating and treacherous south Korea-U.S. "Status of Forces Agreement" (SOFA), a slavery document of modern version. The "agreement" brought the south Korean people unbearable hardship, misery and disgrace for nearly half a century, the article says, laying bare the inequality of the "agreement". SOFA is a document that legitimized the privileged position of the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces in south Korea, the article says, and goes on: The "agreement" deals with criminal jurisdiction, the issue of using land and facilities, taxes and immigration over the U.S. forces in south Korea. Every item of the agreement, however, grants the U.S. forces unilateral rights. SOFA made the GIs an "emperor" in south Korea and turned the land into a theatre of their crimes. The conclusion of the treacherous agreement fostered GIs' crimes in south Korea, far from eradication. Their means and methods baffled human imagination. There happened murder, plunder and lots of other crimes by the GIs in south Korea so far. Tragic is that there were the dead and victims but no killers and assailants. The U.S. forces to be posted abroad regard south Korea as an "ideal military service place". This is entirely attributable to SOFA. The "agreement" which brings disgrace to the south Korean people is an inevitable product of the U.S. policy of military presence in south Korea. Prerequisite to ending the misfortune and disgraceful history and achieving the country's reunification by the Korean nation itself is to withdraw the GIs from south Korea and depose sycophantic traitors from office. |
