Reappointment of Chairman of S. Korean "Human Rights Committee" under Fire

Pyongyang, August 18 (KCNA) -- The Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea on Friday issued its Information Bulletin No. 1007. It said: Traitor Lee Myung Bak reappointed Hyon Pyong Chol, anti-DPRK confrontation maniac, as chairman of the "Human Rights Committee" on August 13 despite strong opposition of political and all other circles of south Korea. In the past Hyon was voted down at the confirmation hearing of the "National Assembly" for the whole gamut of irregularities and corruptions he committed such as human rights abuses, speculation of real estate and his son's evasion of conscription. Even the ruling party opposed his reappointment. Lee, however, posted such a sordid guy as chairman of the "Human Rights Committee." This is another provocation prompted by his sinister intention for escalating confrontation with the DPRK in a bid to cover up the unpardonable human rights abuses he committed during his office and kick up the human rights racket against the DPRK. This is aimed to keep these acts remain going under the next regime. By nature, the "Human Rights Committee" came into existence during the former "people's government" with an aim to investigate human rights violations in south Korea and the damage done by them and take necessary measures. But Lee, afraid of the committee becoming a stumbling block in enforcing the fascist dictatorial rule after he took office, made unsuccessful efforts to make it mechanism directly under Chongwadae. So he ousted all conscientious officials from the committee and appointed Hyon as its chairman, turning the committee into an organization breeding plots against human rights in the DPRK. During Lee's office, the said committee has stepped up the smear campaign against the DPRK, citing the "plan for improved human rights", "international seminar on human rights" and institution of "north Korean human rights law". The committee shot to prominence the non-existent "human rights" issue of the DPRK while shutting its eyes to the tragic deaths of evacuees in Ryongsan, suppression of candle-light demonstrators who were opposed to the import of American beef, illegal surveillance of civilians and the authorities' other hideous human rights abuses. The recent reappointment suggests that such anti-DPRK smear campaign may be more undisguised. The political and other different circles of south Korea and international human rights bodies are raising their voices of great concern and denunciation, calling the reappointment the worst decision and strongly demanding the resignation of Hyon Pyong Chol. The south Korean people should intensify fighting against the confrontation moves of the puppet conservative regime that have become ever-more desperate before the end of its term and thus resolutely shatter its plots against the DPRK. |
