The academy was the highest educational institution of the state built in the period of Koryo.

President Kim Il Sung visited Kaesong City on May 5, 1992. He said that it was necessary to show that there is actually an academy which carried forward Songkyunkwan Academy in Korea, named the academy and indicated the year of its founding.

He pointed to the faculty and courses and specified tasks and ways to develop the academy into the University of Light Industry. He personally wrote the name of the university with a writing brush.

Leader Kim Jong Il solved the issues arising in constructing a new building of the university and managing and operating it and took deep care of its teachers and students so that they might effect innovations in education and study.

The dear respected Kim Jong Un wisely led the construction of the new building of the academy as a monumental edifice in the era of Songun and made sure that its founding anniversary was significantly celebrated.
