Pyongyang, September 9 (KCNA) -- Sixty-four years have passed since President Kim Il Sung founded the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on September 9, Juche 37 (1948). On this anniversary, the DPRK people are looking back upon the feat performed by the President for the national flag. On November 18, 1947 when the building of a new country was at its height, he suggested adopting the national flag at the 3rd Session of North Korean People's Assembly and acquainted himself with its design early in February of the next year. He indicated the orientation and ways for establishing the DPRK flag, stating that it should clearly represent the national identity in its form and content. And he personally proposed its design. Under his meticulous guidance the DPRK flag was instituted at the DPRK Constitution adopted on September 8, 1948. The national flag of the DPRK consists of a central red panel, bordered both above and below by a narrow white stripe and a broad blue stripe. The central red panel bears, in the hoist, a five-pointed red star within a white circle. The ratio of the width to the length is 1:2. The five-pointed red star of the flag symbolizes the brilliant revolutionary traditions, established by President Kim Il Sung during the anti-Japanese armed struggle, and the rosy future of the country. The red stripe represents the Korean people's indomitable fighting spirit and socialist patriotism and the invincible might of their single-minded unity. The white circle and the two white stripes represent the identity of the Korean people as a homogenous nation with a long history and brilliant culture and their patriotic stamina. And the two blue stripes in the outermost parts of the flag mean the Korean people's desire for peace and friendship with the world people. |
