In the site leader Kim Jong Il conducted military camping from August to October Juche 51 (1962) during his days of study at Kim Il Sung University.

In the period, he experienced a soldier life with other students, even volunteering to perform mess duty. He stressed that it is hard to get a good understanding of soldiers without experiencing their life and that a brilliant commander's wisdom and courage develop through such life.

The experience led him to take warm care of soldiers whenever he made inspection tours of military units as the supreme commander of the Korean People's Army.

In those days, he put strain into the study of the Juche-based military idea, theories and tactics of President Kim Il Sung, authoring such works as "On the Unique Military Idea of the Great Leader" and "The Factor of Victory in War".

On the other hand, he worked hard to establish the Korean way of military training suitable to domestic conditions.

His military life in Oun-dong gives a glimpse of the exploits he performed in guiding the Songun (military-first) revolution for the country and people.
