Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- Koryo Songgyungwan University in Kaesong City of the DPRK trains technical personnel needed in the light industry sector. Some days ago a new building with three blocks was constructed at the university with the support of the state. This building has comprehensive lecture room, classrooms, experimental rooms, chair rooms, welfare facilities, etc. The university was derived from Songgyungwan, the highest educational institution in the periods of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392) and Ri Dynasty (1392-1910). In Korea Songgyungwan is called the world's first university as its predecessor Kukjagam was established in 992. At that time it had more than 20 buildings including Myongryun Hall, 19.3 meters in length and 9.3 meters in width, and dormitories called Tongjae and Sojae. Famous scholar Ri Saek was the chief of this school at the close of Koryo Kingdom and it had lots of famous scholars as its teachers. In May Juche 81 (1992), President Kim Il Sung visited the school, saying that this historical building is as valuable as national treasure. He suggested that it be turned into a university of light industry and called Koryo Songgyungwan. The President personally wrote the signboard of university in Korean and Chinese characters and advised officials to set September 1992 as its birthday. He also clarified subjects to be dealt with at the university and its mission, duty, position and role and the matters arising in the construction and management of it. Leader Kim Jong Il provided the university with latest educational facilities as a gift and solved the issues arising in ensuring educational conditions. Now the university has several faculties and many courses including Koryo Insam Faculty, Koryo Ceramics Faculty, Koryo Textile Faculty and Koryo Embroidery Faculty, laboratories and experimental workshop. |
