Dance Drama "Story of Sado Castle" Staged in DPRK

Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Nowadays the dance drama "Story of Sado Castle" has been staged by the National Folk Art Troupe at the People's Theater here. The drama gives a portrayal of the patriotic Korean people who fought against invaders during the period of the Three Kingdoms (Koguryo, Paekje and Silla). It breaks into five acts, eight scenes and epilogue. In the drama Kum I (female lead), daughter of the lord of Sado Castle, meets fisherman Sun Ji (male lead) for the first time when they simultaneously let off arrows at one pheasant in a fine spring day, and they fall in love. But their love faces setback by A Han, a warrior escort of the lord, who had an eye to Kum I. Meanwhile, Sun Ji's native village is invaded by Japs, who slaughtered inhabitants and looted their properties, and Sado Castle is placed at the crucial moment of its fall. A Han surrenders to the enemy. But Kum I and Sun Ji, together with inhabitants, heroically fight the invaders to defend the castle and their love matures into a marriage. The dance drama is highly acclaimed for the successful presentation of the Koreans' wisdom and bravery and diverse customs through traditional dance movements. This drama was created fifty years ago by Choe Sung Hui, a famous dancer, who played a leading role in it. The drama was recreated last year to commemorate her 100th birth anniversary. |
