Halt to Jeju Island Naval Base Construction Demanded by S. Korean Organizations
Pyongyang, October 29 (KCNA) -- Civic and social organizations of south Korea held a press conference demanding a halt to the construction of the naval base on Jeju Island on October 23.

They included the Kangjong Village Association, the All-islanders Measure Committee for Checking the Military Base on Jeju Island and the south Korean Measure Committee for Checking the Construction of the Naval Base on Jeju Island.

Speakers at the press conference said the "prime minister's" office formed a technical verification committee with an aim to calm down public opposition to the naval base construction, but it was disclosed that it was operated in a slip shot manner and was not properly verified. It was also disclosed that when a report presented by the committee was discussed before its adoption, a vice-minister level official of the office put pressure upon an official not to raise a just issue concerning the safe operation of ships.

This being a hard reality, the office refused to admit all this but only told a lie, they claimed, and continued:

Now that it has become clear the naval base was designed for the entry and departure of U.S. nuclear-powered submarines and carriers, the authorities are still pulling the wool over the people's eyes.

They urged the office to stop the construction of the naval base, bearing in mind that it will not be able to escape their judgment should it persistently shut its eyes to the questionable issues concerning the construction.

Then they thrust a written protest to the "prime minister's" office.
