Kim Ok Song, Noted Composer of DPRK

Pyongyang, December 4 (KCNA) -- Recently released in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was feature film "Kim Ok Song, War Composer" (parts 1 and 2). Kim Ok Song (1916-1965) produced many famous songs implanting the Korean army and people with patriotism. Born in a farm village in South Hwanghae Province, he had a strong taste for music and wanted to be a composer in his early days. After the country's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, his dream came true under the care of President Kim Il Sung. In November 1945 he composed an operetta "Princess of Rangnang", his maiden work. The "Song of Women", composed by him later, contributed to arousing the women to the building of new Korea after the promulgation of law on sex equality in the country. Among his typical works at that time are cantata "The River Amnok" and orchestral music "Countryside in Spring". In the days of the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) he, as a war composer, created "To a Decisive Battle", "My Song in the Trench" and other songs encouraging the army and people to victory in the war. After the war, Kim worked as vice-chairman of the C.C., Musicians Union of Korea, intensifying the creative activities in practice, true to the President's Juche-based ideas of the arts and literature. In the course a lots of masterpieces were created, among them orchestral music and chorus "A Bumper Harvest in the Chongsan Plain", song "Kangson Is Hometown of Chollima" and children's song "Beautiful Mangyongdae". His works were published in "Kim Ok Song Collection of Compositions" and they are still popular among people. |
