Pyongyang, December 4 (KCNA) -- It was late in his life that Jong Ju Yong, honorary chairman of south Korea's Hyundai Group, took the road of national reconciliation, reunification, cooperation and exchange, encouraged by leader Kim Jong Il. "I make devotion to the nation with business" -- this was Jong's motto as a businessman. In late October Juche 87 (1998), Kim Jong ll met Jong Ju Yong staying in Pyongyang to seek economic cooperation between the north and the south of Korea. Praising Jong for his guts, Kim Jong Il entrusted tourism of Mt. Kumgang to the Hyundai Group. And the leader said he would always stand for those who were to do a good job for the nation. Back to south Korea, Jong speeded up the project for Mt. Kumgang tourism and opened the tourism by sea in November that year, gratifying the south Koreans' desire to see one of the nation's scenic mountains. Kim Jong Il took measures for smooth progress of Jong's business. Meeting again Jong after the publication of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, he said that Jong was a pioneer of the movement for national reconciliation and his merits would be recorded in the Korean history. When taking a photo session, he proposed Jong to sit on a chair, afraid of his discomfort. Later, he sent wild insam and embroidery of pine and crane to Jong, wishing his good health and longevity. Inspired by his heartfelt love and trust, the honorary chairman invariably went along the road of reunification and patriotism, despite the pressure and blackmail of the separatists. When Jong died in March 2001, Kim Jong Il sent a message of condolence and a wreath on his behalf. And he sent a message on the 10th anniversary of Jong's death. The leader also named Hyundai-funded gymnasium, built on the bank of the Pothong River in Pyongyang, Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium. |
