Pyongyang, December 30 (KCNA) -- Residents of Kangjong Village on Jeju Island of south Korea and members of civic and social organizations including the Citizens' Solidarity for Democratic Society held a press conference beside the building of the "National Assembly" on Dec. 24 demanding the reduction of the 2013 total budget for a naval base construction on Jeju Island. The speakers at the conference accused the "government" authorities of contemplating shaping a budget for the base construction. The present "government" is advertising that the harbor now under construction at Kangjong Village would be operated for both civilian and military purposes, but it is nothing but a gimmick as it makes a mockery of the people, they added. It is the desire of the residents on Jeju Island to defend the land on which they have lived generation after generation and hand it to their children, the speakers noted. They urged the authorities to lend an ear to the residents' voices and cut down the total budget for the base construction. |
