S. Korean Regime Slammed for Seeking to Pardon Criminals
Pyongyang, January 19 (KCNA) -- The Joint Action for Releasing Prisoners of Conscience in south Korea held a press conference in Seoul on Jan. 16 denouncing the Lee Myung Bak group of traitors for moving to have special pardon granted to their relatives and confidants who were arrested on charges of corruption and irregularities.

At the press conference, the organization revealed that Lee Myung Bak is thinking of granting special pardon to Lee Sang Duk, his elder brother, Choe Si Jung, former chairman of the Broadcasting and News Service Committee, Pak Yong Jun, former vice-minister of Knowledge and Economy, the former vice-minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, etc.

Lee Myung Bak's proposal for granting special pardon to politicians, his close confidants, without having them stood for trial will naturally touch off resentment of the people.

Every time Lee issued an order of pardon, he called for the "people's unity", it noted, adding:

Pardon should be granted to prisoners of conscience.

But the present regime is persistently cracking down upon the people in their struggle for right to existence and the progressive social movement, and has refused to grant special pardon to all prisoners of conscience in custody on unreasonable charges.

Hundreds of prisoners of conscience are now behind bars.

The organization urged the authorities to stop the moves for special pardon and release the prisoners of conscience.
