Korea's Traditional Sporting Events
|
|
Pyongyang, February 14 (KCNA) -- The Korean people have long maintained their traditional sporting events, which are mainly categorized by physical training, intelligence development and martial arts. Physical training events include seesawing, running race, tug of war and wrestling while intelligence development events are characterized by paduk (go) and chess. Martial arts events include Subak (Korean martial arts using only hands), spearing, Taekwon-Do and archery. Koreans spared no efforts in training martial arts, particularly in the period of Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668), to defend the territory from invasion. Practicing archery and horse riding were considered a sacred deed and duty. The traditional sporting events are still encouraged in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. |
