DPRK Strives to Put Meteorological Observation on IT Basis
Pyongyang, March 23 (KCNA) -- March 23 is World Meteorological Day and the 50th anniversary of the World Weather Watch.

To mark the day, the World Meteorological Organization set the theme for this year as "Watching the Weather to Protect Life and Property".

In recent years climate change has come up as a more serious matter to be urgently dealt with worldwide.

90 percent of natural disasters, 70 percent of human casualties and 80 percent of economic losses the world suffered over the past 30 years were caused by tropical cyclones, hurricanes, drought and flood.

In this regard the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has directed big efforts to putting weather forecast on a scientific basis.

Efforts are concentrated on the research into securing the numerical weather forecast.

Topocentric data collected by the Academy of Agricultural Science and other related units have been used for weather observation.

Meanwhile, automatic observation facilities are to be installed at observation stations in Pyongyang and local areas this year.
