Different Social Status of Women

Pyongyang, March 26 (KCNA) -- Women in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have enjoyed worthwhile life under the care of society. The song "Women Are Flowers", popular in the country, lively represents the social status of them, who are called flowers in families and worksites. With rights equal to men, they are now performing feats in the efforts for building a thriving nation. But, the thing goes to the opposite in south Korea. Women's right to existence is ruthlessly trampled down there. For the mere reason that they are female, they are faced with humiliation, maltreatment, discrimination and assault. They dare not to go outside in the evenings for fear of being raped and assaulted, a common practice rampant in south Korean society. Women in their 20s and 30s would fall victims to the economic depression, being dismissed from businesses before anybody else, as the scapegoat of "expense cut". Moreover, a large number of women have been reduced to playthings of GIs present in south Korea. South Korea appeared to be the lowest in the world in the legal and social status of women, who are the greatest victims of discrimination in wage and employment, according to a report made by a British economic survey agency. |
