Pyongyang, April 3 (KCNA) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has paid big efforts to conserving and propagating tigers of Mt. Paektu. The tiger is one of national treasures, which inhabits the area of Samjiyon and Taehongdan counties in Ryanggang Province where Mt. Paektu is situated. Kim Kyong Sun, a researcher of the Central Committee of the Nature Conservation Union of Korea, told KCNA: Tiger is considered to be a symbol of bravery. The tiger of Mt. Paektu indigenous to Korea has been listed as one of rare animals under international protection. The grown-up tiger is big with its back yellow brown-colored and stomach and inside of four legs white-colored. 24 black-colored stripes are laid across the back and 5 across the stomach, with 8 ring-shaped patterns on the tail. The Paektu Plateau is forested with Abies nesphrolepis, spruce and larch, scattered with rocks and bogs. Living in the area are also various species of animals such as antelope, deer, roe deer, yellow-throated marten, fox and wolf. Therefore, it provides good conditions for the tiger to live in. Living for about 25 years, Mt. Paektu tiger has a litter of two to four and six to the maximum every two or three years. |
