The strategic line is a succession and development of the unique line of simultaneously developing the economy and national defense, advanced by President Kim Il Sung and steadily maintained by leader Kim Jong Il.

The line was put forward in December 1962 when the U.S. was running amuck to invade the DPRK and other Asian countries, elevated after the Caribbean Crisis. It was a reasonable line aimed to defend the gains of the revolution from the imperialists' aggression moves and a unique line that should be maintained steadfastly by a working-class party.

By firmly maintaining the line, Kim Jong Il defended the nation's destiny and paved a way for building a thriving nation.

In the period of the Arduous March, the forced march, he set forth the line of economic construction on giving priority to defence industry and simultaneously developing light industry and agriculture.

In his lifetime, he had paid deep attention to building the nuclear deterrent for self-defence, thus turning the country into a nuclear state.

The prevailing situation clearly shows that to bolster up the nuclear armed forces is the only just choice for the DPRK's steady advance along the road of socialism, the road of independence.

The new strategic line also serves as a key to speeding up the economic development by settling the shortage of electricity on the basis of Juche-based atomic energy industry.
