The joint conference was the first pan-national meeting after Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, in which representatives of political parties and social organizations in the north and south of the country set together to discuss the common measures of the nation and reach the identity of view and action.

In September 1945 the U.S. imperialists set their feet in south Korea as "liberator" to turn it into their colony. And they brought the Korean issue to the UN to adopt an illegal "decision" on having "separate elections" in south Korea.

After all, the Korean nation was standing at the crossroads of reunification or division.

At this crucial time, President Kim Il Sung at the presidium meeting of the C.C., Democratic National United Front of North Korea proposed the Joint Conference in order to foil the U.S. moves for aggression and national division and set up a united democratic central government by concerted efforts of patriotic forces in the north and the south of the country.

The proposal was fully approved and hailed by political parties, groups and personages of different walks of life in the north and the south of Korea.

In April Juche 37 (1948) the Joint Conference took place in Pyongyang, attended by 695 representatives of 56 political parties and social organizations from the north and the south.

Making a historic report at the Conference, Kim Il Sung set forth immediate tasks facing the Korean nation on the basis of a profound analysis of the prevailing political situation in the country.

All the participants in the Conference reached a complete consensus on all its agenda items to meet the great expectation of the entire nation.

The successful Conference, a good model of great national unity, was thanks to the energetic efforts and patriotic devotion of Kim Il Sung.
