Agro-forestry Management Activities Brisk in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 2 (KCNA) -- Agro-forestry management activities are gaining momentum in Suan County, North Hwanghae Province, the DPRK.

As one of the mountainous areas, the county has limited arable land. In the past it had been dependent on mountains to solve the shortage of food, fuel and timber, causing decreased forests.

Under such circumstances, it began applying the method of agro-forestry management to mountain plots.

It organized three sloping land user teams in the county town with housewives and old people for the management on trial. Afterwards, such teams were organized in other parts of the county.

The teams raise saplings of good species of trees in nurseries built in mountains.

Forests were created in accordance with tree species. And areas suitable for crop cultivation were chosen for the agro-forestry management.

Firewood areas were fixed in a rational way and natural and artificial grasslands appeared in pastures.

The agro-forestry management method has reduced soil erosion 50 to 70 percent in the county.

The county plans to apply the method to all parts of the county to turn the area into thick woodland in the near future.
