Sports Games Gain Momentum in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Sports contests in various events take place frequently in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Among those finished up till now were Paektusan Prize and Mangyongdae Prize sports games, a short-track speed skating tournament (junior), a rally cycling and the first-stage 39th National Schoolchildren's Sports Contest for Jongilbong Prize.

The 50th National Games of Juvenile Sports Schools are taking place in various parts of the country, with nearly 40 events involved.

A premier soccer league is now under way in Pyongyang as part of the Sports Contest for Pochonbo Torch Prize.

Ice hockey matches for the National Youth Championship took place at the Ice Rink from May 15 to 18.

Sports contests have been also held among employees of ministries, national institutions, organs of various levels and industrial establishments. The events include volleyball, basketball and table tennis.

Courts of volleyball, basketball and tennis, built in Pyongyang and local cities of the country, are bustling with games of students and other citizens almost every day.

Meanwhile, DPRK athletes have proved successful at international tournaments.

Kim Kum Ok won a gold medal at the 14th Asian Marathon Championship held in Hong Kong and Hong Kuk Hyon came first in the men's 73kg category at the 2013 Asian Judo Championship and Pak Yong Mi in the women's 48kg freestyle at the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship.

Gymnasts Jong Kum Hwa and Kim Hye Song bagged gold medals at the 8th Asian Acrobatic Gymnastic Championship.

Paddlers Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong won gold medals in the mixed doubles of the 52nd ITTF World Championships (individual events) while Ri Chung Il garnered a gold medal at the international boxing tournament named after Konstantin Korotkov.
