DPRK Athletes Prove Successful at Int'l Tournaments

Pyongyang, June 19 (KCNA) -- Athletes of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have made good results at international tournaments. Kim Hyon Gyong and Jong Myong Suk won gold medals in the women's 44 kg and 51kg freestyle events respectively at the 2013 Asian Young Wrestling Championship held in Phuket, Thailand some days ago. Kim Hyok Bong and Kim Jong came first in the mixed doubles of the 52nd ITTF World Championships (individual events). Yang Kyong Il placed first in the men's 55 kg freestyle event at an international wrestling tournament held in Bulgaria, bringing the first gold medal to the country for this year. Kim Kum Ok finished first at the 14th Asian Marathon Championship while Ri Se Gwang took the men's vaulting horse title at the 6th Competition for the Cup for Gymnastic Challengers of the International Gymnastic Federation. A total of 11 medals, including gold medals, went to the DPRK at the 2013 World Juvenile Weightlifting Championships. Hong Kuk Hyon placed first in the men's 73kg category at the 2013 Asian Judo Championship and Pak Yong Mi and Hwang Ryong Hak in the women's 48kg freestyle and men's 60kg freestyle respectively at the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship. Jong Kum Hwa and Kim Hye Song bagged gold medals in two-woman etude event at the 8th Asian Acrobatic Gymnastic Championship. Ri Ji Ryon and Kim Kum Hyang came first at the 2013 World Short Track Speed Skating Tournament for Development Cup of the International Skating Union (ISU) and Ri Chung Il garnered a gold medal at the International Boxing Tournament named after Konstatin Korotkov. The DPRK won trophies, top technical prizes and best player prizes, more than 10 in total, in the first half of the year. Such signal achievements have fanned up zeal for sporting activities among the local people. |
