The music is a reminder of the soldiers of the Korean People's Army who devotedly fought battles in the pass during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 1950-July 1953).

In July Juche 39 (1950), the soldiers went over a series of heights, fighting fierce battles against the enemy to advance southward.

When climbing up the pass early in August that year, President Kim Il Sung said that the pass was merely a route linking Kyonggi area to Ryongnam area, but it rose to fame for death-defying battles against the U.S. invaders. He further said that the heroic feats performed by the soldiers in the pass would remain forever in the hearts of the Korean people.

The song "Mungyong Pass" was written by Jo Ki Chon and composed by Ri Myon Sang in 1950. It was arranged as an orchestral music in 1971.
