Torrential Rain Hits DPRK, Causing Flood Damage
Pyongyang, July 22 (KCNA) -- Heavy rains have swept the central part of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, causing flood damage.

According to data available at the Hydro-meteorological Service, the precipitation, registered in 20 days after the start of this year's rainy season, is nearly twice the average rainfall in the month of July.

On July 20, the highest precipitation was recorded in Tongsin, Songwon, Ryongrim and Thaechon counties.

From 21:00 July 19 to 15:00 July 21, 413 mm rainfall was recorded in Tongsin County, 383 mm in Songwon County, 380 mm in Thaechon County, 322 mm in Huichon City, 312 mm in Hyangsan County, 304 mm in Tongchang County and over 200 mm in Kusong City, Sonchon and Nyongbyon counties and Tokchon City.

It rained 109 mm in Thaechon County and 68 mm in Hyangsan County from 06:00 to 09:00 July 20, 64 mm in Thaechon County and 63 mm in Tongchang County from 09:00 to 12:00, 66 mm in Unsan County from 10:15 to 12:00 and 102 mm in Sunchon City, 79 mm in Huichon City and 72 mm in Phyongwon County from 15:00 to 18:00.

The downpour-triggered flood left five people dead and 3 others missing from 18:00 July 17 to 18:00 July 20.

The flood destroyed or submerged more than 6 060 dwelling houses throughout the country, with 3 120 in North Phyongan Province and 2 800 in South Phyongan Province, leaving some 23 770 people homeless.

Several hundred hectares of cropland were inundated or buried in North Phyongan Province and North Hwanghae Province.

The heavy rain damaged 6 330 meters of roads in Yangdok County, South Phyongan Province.
