2013 Asian Cup and Club Weightlifting Championships to Be Held in Pyongyang
Pyongyang, September 7 (KCNA) -- The 2013 Asian Cup and Club Weightlifting Championships will take place here from September 11 to 17.

The championships, to be held in junior and senior divisions, will draw more than 200 weightlifters from 10 countries and regions, including the DPRK, China, Kuwait and Thailand.

Weightlifting is considered to be one of the hopeful events for the DPRK.

In recent years the DPRK has proved successful in Asian and world weightlifting championships.

It won three gold medals in the 30th London Olympics, with Rim Jong Sim in women's 69 kg category, Kim Un Guk in men's 62 kg and Om Yun Chol in men's 56 kg. Kim Un Guk and Om Yun Chol set the world and Olympic records.

The DPRK garnered 18 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals in the 2012 Asian Junior and Juvenile Weightlifting Championships and seven gold and four silver medals in the 2013 World Youth Weightlifting Championships.

It topped the team standings in the 2013 Asian Weightlifting Championships, with 15 gold, eight silver and five bronze medals.

The DPRK boasts of weightlifting aces, including Kim Myong Nam who bettered the world records four times in world weightlifting championships and Ri Song Hui who won gold medals in the 15th World Women's Weightlifting Championships and the 12th and 13th Asian Women's Weightlifting Championships.
