It accused the Ministry of Employment and Labor of threatening not to recognize the union unless it amends the present rules.

To put down the legitimacy of the union is intolerable as it is an act of trampling down the rights of the people, it said.

It termed such suppression a politically-motivated crackdown to disorganize pro-democracy figures.

On September 23 the Teachers Union held an emergency meeting at which it announced its action program.

It said that it would form a joint measure committee together with educational, civic, public and labor organizations and stage strong actions such as a joint press conference, publication of statements and declarations and candlelight rallies.
