When it was founded, the university had only nine departments. Now it has three colleges, several faculties, doctoral institute, architecture institute, building materials institute, etc.

Over the past years teachers, researchers and graduates of the university have made significant contributions to building monumental edifices in the capital city of Pyongyang and other parts of the country.

The history of its development is associated with the devoted efforts of the great Generalissimos Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.

President Kim Il Sung took a step to found the then university of construction in October Juche 42 (1953) after the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953). And he carefully guided the work for laying its material and technological foundations.

He developed it into the Pyongyang University of Construction and Building-materials Industry in the 1970s and indicated the orientation and ways for the university to follow, visiting it eight times.

Leader Kim Jong Il visited the university in the 1960s to set forth the tasks for improving the educational work and took measures one after another to properly adopt the teaching program and select the right educational system, faculty and subjects of study at the university.

He stressed the need for the university to creditably discharge its mission as a comprehensive center training personnel in the fields of construction, city and land management and environmental protection.

In those days of their guidance to the university, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il personally examined and highly appreciated the miniatures and designs of many buildings created by it, including Pyongyang Indoor Stadium, Grand People's Study House, Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace, East Pyongyang Grand Theatre and Central Youth Hall and general review room of the Three-Revolution Exhibition House.

In the past six decades the university has trained many architectural personnel by steadily improving the educational contents and teaching methods and solved lots of scientific and technical problems arising in construction and city management.

It produced many academic degree holders and state order-bearers, including more than 100 winners of the titles of DPRK Hero or Labor Hero.
