President Kim Il Sung founded the stadium on April 3, Juche 62 (1973). It has been recently remodeled into a monumental edifice in the era of Songun.

Over the past 40 years the stadium has successfully discharged its honorable mission and duty as reliable sports and cultural base conducive to the development of the country's sports and the cultural and emotional life of the people and a grand political festival venue for ensuring important events of the party and the state.

A meeting marking the anniversary took place on Friday.
