President Kim Il Sung founded the institute on October 20, Juche 42 (1953) and clearly indicated the orientation and ways to be followed by it.

Leader Kim Jong Il advanced the revolutionary policy on turning the country's irrigation system into the gravity-fed irrigation system and realigning the land as befitting the land of the socialist state. He wisely led the designers and officials of the institute to make a new innovation in the drive to give a face-lift to the appearance of the land.

Over the past 60 years the institute has strengthened into the reliable irrigation designing base of the country with strong designing force and solid material and technological foundation and successfully carried out its revolutionary tasks.

It designed the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway, the Paekma-Cholsan Waterway and the Miru Plain Waterway with gravity-fed form, guided the construction in a responsible manner and finished in a short span of time the designing for realigning hundreds of thousands of hectares of land in Kangwon, South Hwanghae and North Phyongan provinces.

The Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea sent a congratulatory message to the designers and officials of the institute on the 60th anniversary of its founding.

A meeting marking the anniversary took place on Saturday.

Present there were Mun Kyong Dok, secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK and chief secretary of the Pyongyang City Committee of the WPK, officials concerned and employees of the institute.
