Legends about Mt. Kumgang (7)
|
|
Pyongyang, November 8 (KCNA) -- In Outer Kumgang of Mt. Kumgang there is a guard-shaped peak, called Rojok, which stands in front of Sujong Peak. The peak tells about a legend well known among the local people. Many, many years ago, Sujong Peak had rich deposits of crystal. So, foreign pirates frequently attempted to invade this area for crystal. One day the villagers were told that dozens of pirate ships were sailing toward Jangjon Bay in the East Sea of Korea. A young man of great strength devised a plan for driving back the invaders. With this plan, the villagers piled up rice straw, like a stack of grain, on a hill by the shore all night. And they turned the bay port milk-white by scattering white soil in waters as if a huge number of troops washed rice there for meal and made a campfire on Ppyojok Peak near the port to illuminate all those scenes. The next day pirate spies came to see the grain stack, milk-white water and campfire, surmising that a large number of troops were stationed there. Overpowered by such terrific scenes, the foreign pirates could not but retreat from the area. After all, the villagers repulsed the pirates' attack with wisdom and stratagem. Since then people have called the hill "Rojok (stack of grain) Peak" and Ppyojok Peak "Chodae (candle) Peak". |
