Legends about Mt. Chilbo (3)
Pyongyang, November 14 (KCNA) -- There are two caves called Taejang (general) and Chonchi (idiot) on the way up to Sochaek Peak standing in Inner Chilbo of Mt. Chilbo.

The caves tell about a legend well known among the local people.

Once upon a time, there lived two boys of genius, called Choe Ho and Ri Ho, in a village near the mountain.

Nearing the age of twenty, they had to leave their homes with a lot of books for the caves in Inner Chilbo to apply themselves to studies for three years, as wished by their parents.

They occupied the caves, the upper one for Choe majoring in literature and the lower one for Ri in military affairs.

It happened a few days before the end of their three-year-long self-study that a tiger appeared in the lower cave. But Ri remained unflinching to let the tiger back out with fear.

When the tiger came in the other cave, Choe, astounded by it, could do nothing but seeking hiding place.

Next day, Ri happened to see a pretty woman who said she was wandering about the valley after losing her way to home.

Ri yielded his cave to her and continued his training outside the cave all night.

Choe, too, met in his cave a pretty woman who said she was a daughter of a fisherman. Tempted by her, he bedded her.

After waking up late in the morning, he saw a red fruit which he thought the woman left for him, and swallowed it at a gulp.

The appearance of the tiger and the woman for two consecutive nights was not a contingent happening. It was a stiff test conducted by the deity of Mt. Chilbo to look into the will of the two men.

After that Choe became an idiot and Ri a general.

Since then, the lower cave has been called Taejang Cave and the other cave Chonchi Cave.
