Western Weightlifting at Crisis: News Analyst

Pyongyang, November 18 (KCNA) -- Some sports events including weightlifting are now at a crisis in capitalist society with sports on a commercial basis. Recently reporting about the 2013 World Weightlifting Championship in Wroclaw of Poland, China's Xinhua said Western countries have become so weak in weightlifting. In fact, none of the U.S., UK, German, Canadian, French and Italian players won a medal in the championship where the players competed for the total of 135 medals. Britain has bagged no weightlifting medal since it took a gold medal in the 1st Olympiad in 1896. And it was the last time for the United States to get an Olympic gold in Rome in 1960. Spain has never got an Olympic gold in the weightlifting event, while "sports powers" in Europe and North America have not shown good results in weightlifting for many years. In this regard, an ex-chief coach of the U.S. weightlifting team told that no one could live on weightlifting in his country because what is decisive of the sports development in the U.S. is market and what is decisive of its demand is not Olympic gold medal but people's interest. His remarks give a glimpse of American society where sport is abused as a means for moneymaking. As a matter of fact, in capitalist society the national sports development depends on market, not on the state policy, and making money is regarded more important than to display nation's honor. So, Western countries have no proper system for upgrading the weightlifting event and, consequently, promising weightlifters can hardly develop their talents. A French weightlifter deplored that they could not give full play to their ability in international tournaments because of poor coaching and training method, saying that there was no supply of practice equipment and foodstuffs. A British weightlifting coach said that there had been promising weightlifters in the country, including a strongman who successfully lifted 177kg in snatch and 215 kg in clean and jerk at the age of 17, but all of them gave up weightlifting. This is a tragedy produced by the depraved capitalist system in which money decides everything. |
