Legends about Mt. Kumgang (10)

Pyongyang, November 25 (KCNA) -- There is a lake on a hill over 100 meters above the sea, which has been called Lake Chon in Mt. Kumgang. The hill, standing in the area of scenic beauty called Pyolgumgang, tells about a legend well known among the local people. It has been told that Pyolgumgang was especially created by God of heaven Hwanin and his son Hwanung to add beauties to Mt. Kumgang. Both of them were mythological beings famous in Korean legends. Out of mind to create the world's most beautiful mountain in Korea, Hwanung made Mt. Kumgang together with other gods of talents and informed his father Hwanin of his creation. Hwanin commanded a bird's-eye-view of the mountain from heaven, before saying it was not enough to be called a famous mountain of superb scenic beauty, though it was beautiful. Inspired by his father's opinion, Hwanung toured the whole land of Korea from Mt. Paektu in the north to Jeju Island in the southern tip, during which he found out that the land of Korea was formed with the Great Paektu Range as its mainstay and Mt. Paektu with Lake Chon on it represented the spirit of Korea. He created a lake on the hill like Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu, surrounding it with fantastic cliffs and rocks. Hwanin, satisfied to see the hill, offered jewels and a painting to further landscape the lake, which later turned to rocks. |
