Legends about Mt. Kumgang (12)
Pyongyang, November 27 (KCNA) -- There is a rocky cliff called Ongchon in Namae-ri, Kosong County, Kangwon Province, the DPRK.

In the olden times, people took the lane under the cliff as a shortcut to reach Thongchon area from Kosong.

The cliff, redolent of a big jar standing upside down, tells about a legend well known among the local people.

In the period of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392), Japanese pirates usually sneaked into the villages around Mt. Kumgang via the lane.

It was not a few times that those pirates suffered a massive death by the local people ambushed on the cliff.

One autumn day a large group of Japanese pirates were following the lane to worm into Kosong.

When all those pirates entered an ambush, the villagers, who had remained silent around the cliff, started shooting arrows all at once, dealing a deadly blow to the invaders.

The battle ended in a short time.

There remain records in old history books that Kosong people called the cliff Waeryunchon, representing their pride in defeating Japanese invaders with the cliff as a stronghold.
