Kim Il Sung clarified the three principles of national reunification through the July 4 joint statement and set forth the ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation and the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo, providing fundamental guidelines for the reunification of the country.

Kim Jong Il authored famous works, formulating the idea and line for national reunification put forward by the President as the three charters for national reunification and advancing the five-point policy for great national unity as a powerful weapon for achieving the independent and peaceful reunification of the country. He provided the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and the October 4 declaration, a landmark for national reunification. This was a noteworthy event which paved a wide avenue for independent reunification.

The history of their leadership over socialist construction was a history in which they held aloft the banner of independence. This history records a period in which they steadfastly upheld the line of independence in politics, self-support in economy and self-reliance in national defence, decisively frustrating the pressure of big-power chauvinists, and the course in which they settled all problems in a unique way as required by the actual conditions of the country under the slogan "Let Us Live Our Own Way!" and experience gained in the struggle to build an invincible power with strong Juche character and national identity.

In the 1990s Kim Jong Il made public such immortal works as "Abuses of Socialism Are Intolerable" and "Socialism Is a Science," clarifying truth that socialism is sure to be revived and win final victory for its scientific accuracy and truth although it is undergoing painful twists and turns temporarily.

Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il fully disclosed the reactionary nature of the imperialists' "peace strategy" and wisely led the struggle for boosting solidarity with the world independent forces against imperialism including the non-aligned movement. Thanks to their leadership a turning phase could take place in the struggle for building peaceful new society.

When socialism was suffering ups and downs due to the moves of the imperialists and renegades of socialism Kim Jong Il made sure that the revolutionary parties strengthened international unity and solidarity under the banner of the Pyongyang Declaration. This was a great contribution to victoriously advancing the cause of socialism.

The cause of national reunification and the global cause of independence started and led by Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are now being dynamically pushed forward by Marshal Kim Jong Un.
