Persons of Merits in Juche-based Architecture

Pyongyang, December 16 (KCNA) -- The history of construction in the DPRK, started with a Pothong River improvement project after Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule, is woven with proud annals of great creation and changes in which a large number of monumental edifices took their shapes one after another in the country. In those days many architects and builders devoted all their wisdom and energies to carrying into practice the Workers' Party of Korea's construction plan. Among them is Kim Ung Sang, ex-chairman of the State Construction Commission. He made a big contribution to designing the Pothong River improvement project, working as chairman of the Architectural Union of North Korea (at that time), deeply trusted by President Kim Il Sung, just after the country's liberation. For 30-odd years he took part in designing and construction of grandiose structures and apartment houses in Pyongyang such as the main buildings of Kim Il Sung University and Mangyongdae Revolutionary School, the Rodong Sinmun, Pyongyang Grand Theater and Okryu Restaurant. He also contributed to building the Wangjaesan Revolutionary Site, International Friendship Exhibition House, Grand People's Study House and other edifices across the country under the guidance of General Scretary Kim Jong Il. Kim Jong Hui, former director of the Anju branch of the South Phyongan Provincial City Design Office, took part in drafting the architectural design for a new country, being active as a member of the Architectural Union of North Korea from September 1945. In the 1950-1953 Fatherland Liberation War period, he undertook a task to map out the master plan for postwar rehabilitation of Pyongyang city. And he played a key role in designing for construction of capital and local cities like Sukchon, Anju and Chongjin, working at an important post of the construction designing field until the last moments of his life. Kim Ji Hang, former chief engineer of the Pyongyang City Design Office, too, made contributions to designing the Korean Revolution Museum, International Friendship Exhibition House, Pyongyang city construction and other major projects. Besides, Kim Pyong Sik, ex-director general of the General Bureau of Pyongyang City Construction, So Sang Jun, former chief of the South Phyongan Provincial Youth Construction Brigade and many other architects and builders became persons of merits remembered by the people, under the deep care of the great Generalissimos Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. |
