The idea was advanced as the core of the historic June 15 joint declaration as desired by the Korean nation in the new century and as required by the movement for national reunification.

The first paragraph of the declaration says that the north and the south of Korea decided to independently settle the issue of the reunification of the nation by concerted efforts of the Koreans responsible for it.

The idea calls for rejecting foreign forces and achieving the reunification of the country by efforts of the Koreans.

Only when Koreans cherish this idea, can they have confidence in the united strength of the nation and make positive efforts to achieve the national unity, guided by the idea.

It is an intrinsic requirement of the movement for national reunification to achieve the national unity.

It is quite natural to settle the issue of the inter-Korean ties from the standpoint of By Our Nation Itself.

The north and the south should resolve all issues on the principle of independence and unity from the firm standpoint, the idea of reunification common to the nation.

It is not a right attitude to argue about the sincerity of the patriotic efforts of fellow countrymen to pave the way for mending the north-south relations by concerted efforts of the Korean nation, and doubt it.

It is a key issue in shaping out the destiny of the nation independently to hold aloft the banner of By Our Nation Itself.

Independent reunification, peace and prosperity will come earlier when all Koreans in the north, the south and abroad struggle in firm unity, guided by the noble idea.
