Sitaram Yechury, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), was elected chairman of the preparatory committee.

The preparatory committee decided to organize diverse political and cultural events such as meeting and seminar to praise the exploits performed by Kim Jong Il in accomplishing the global cause of independence on the occasion of the Day of the Shining Star.
