Pyongyang, February 22 (KCNA) -- Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) occurred in the DPRK. According to Ri Kyong Gun, director of the Ministry of Agriculture, the disease broke out at the Pyongyang Pig Factory in Sadong District, Pyongyang on January 8 and has spread to 17 units in Pyongyang and Junghwa County of North Hwanghae Province as of now. At least 3,200 pigs were infected by FMD type O, more than 360 of them died and over 2,900 of them were butchered, causing lots of economic damage. In this regard, the National Veterinary Emergency Control Committee was organized and emergency was declared across the country. The infected areas are quarantined and disinfected, the diseased pigs are treated and the dead ones are buried. However, the disease continues spreading due to the shortages of FMD vaccines, diagnostic means and disinfection medicines. |
