The three principles of national reunification -- independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity -- which were solemnly declared through the July 4 joint statement at home and abroad serve as a cornerstone of Korea's reunification as they clarify the fundamental stand and basic ways for solving the issue of the reunification of the country by concerted efforts of the Koreans in line with the will and interests of the nation.

The idea of By Our Nation Itself set forth in the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration represents the idea of national independence and unity and a basic idea of achieving independent reunification in the new century as it calls for independently achieving the reunification of the country by concerted efforts of the Koreans who are responsible for reunification.

The three principles of national reunification and the idea of By Our Nation Itself are the most fair and vital ones to be respected, preserved and implemented by the north and the south.

The north and the south should absolutely respect in any case the July 4 joint statement, the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration which the north and the south jointly agreed upon and declared at home and abroad. They should hold fast to the three principles of national reunification and the idea of By Our Nation Itself reflected in the great programmes for reunification as common principles and idea for settling the issue of the inter-Korean relations.

It is the demand of the times and aspiration and steadfast will of all Koreans to achieve the reunification of the country on the three principles of national reunification and in the idea of By Our Nation Itself.

A rosy future of independent reunification, peace and prosperity is sure to be opened when the north and the south aspire to the improved inter-Korean relations and the reunification of the country on the three principles of national reunification and the standpoint of By Our Nation Itself.
