Archery has been regarded as one of the national athletics in Korea from long ago. Seen in history books are records reading that "Koreans have a forte for archery and riding".

Archery had been further developed in the Age of Three Kingdoms.

The people of Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668) liked archery in particular and the kingdom organized shooting event in March every year on a nation-wide scale.

It can be well evidenced by mural paintings dating back to the kingdom, which show archers of different social standings.

Now, archery has been encouraged in the DPRK as a means for physical training and cultural life.

The country has channeled big efforts to improving the skills of professional archers, while paying deep attention to training reserve archers. It is also pushed forward in the DPRK to put archery training on a scientific basis.
