News Analysis on June 15 Era of Reunification in Korea
Pyongyang, June 14 (KCNA) -- It has been 14 years after the North-South Joint Declaration, a banner for independent reunification of the Korean nation, was adopted on June 15, Juche 89 (2000).

The adoption warmed up the relations between the north and the south of Korea, locked in confrontation and distrust, bringing about remarkable events to the Korean Peninsula.

With this declaration, the north-south relationship turned into that of reconciliation, cooperation and unity. Until 2007, there took place at least 140 dialogues and contacts between the authorities of the two sides, including 21 ministerial talks and 13 meetings of the north-south committee for the promotion of economic cooperation.

The idea of By Our Nation Itself, a core of the joint declaration, gave an impetus to the nationwide movement for independent reunification.

Personages and organizations of different strata from the north and the south had a grand seminar on national reunification at Mt. Kumgang Resort in 2001 to mark the 1st anniversary of the June 15 joint declaration, for the first time in the history of national division.

And compatriots from the north and the south of Korea and abroad met in Pyongyang on August 15, the day of the national liberation from the Japanese colonial rule, that year to hold a grand festival of national reunification.

On August 15, 2002, personages of different strata in the north went to Seoul to have a grand rally for national reunification with their fellow countrymen in the south, displaying the Korean nation's ardent zeal for reunification.

There also took place such various events as gatherings, rallies and seminars of compatriots from all walks of life in the north and the south to support and implement the June 15 joint declaration.

At those pro-reunification events, all the participants hailed the joint declaration and expressed their strong will to bring earlier the reunification of the country by the united efforts of the nation without any intervention of the foreign forces.

In the meantime, railroads, which had been severed for more than half a century, were reconnected on the east and west coastal areas of the country thanks to the joint efforts of the north and the south.

Economic cooperation gained in scope and exchanges developed in sports, culture and other fields between the two sides.

In October 2007 another historic inter-Korean summit took place in Pyongyang, which resulted in the adoption of the October 4 Declaration for Development of North-South Relations and Peace and Prosperity. This significant event again showed the Koreans' fixed will for national reunification.

Any frantic efforts of the separatists at home and abroad can never break the Korean nation's will to accelerate the reunification movement under the banner of the June 15 joint declaration.
