Kim Ung U, Great Patriot

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 166th birth anniversary of Kim Ung U, great-grandfather of President Kim Il Sung Kim Ung U's life was the one wholly consistent with patriotic deeds. When he heard that the U.S. imperialist aggressors' ship General Sherman had sailed up to Yanggak Islet along the River Taedong in 1866, killing people with its cannons and guns and stealing their possessions, he called upon the people in and surrounding Mangyongdae to fight against the aggressors. The people rose in response to his call to sink the ship through a fire attack, thus displaying the stamina of the Korean nation not to forgive any foreign aggressors. The sinking of the ship was a historic victory, the first of its kind in the struggle of the Korean nation against the U.S. After the sinking of the General Sherman, the U.S. imperialist aggressors sent another vessel, the warship Shenandoah, which sailed into the mouth of the River Taedong, where its crew committed murder, incendiary attacks and pillage. Kim Ung U called on the people of Mangyongdae again to form a volunteers unit and fight to defend their country from the Shenandoah. On this occasion, people in the DPRK are recalling with deep emotion his patriotic life. |
