Pyongyang, July 16 (KCNA) -- July and August are the months of maritime physical culture in the DPRK. In the early 1960s, President Kim Il Sung took a measure of setting July and August as months for learning swimming. According to this measure, swimming contests took place at the Hungnam Fertilizer Factory with the attendance of sports teams from across the country. And the maritime sports contest was held in Pyongyang on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the Korean people's victory in the Fatherland Liberation War, followed by a maritime gymnastic display "Sea Calls Young People" in Sinpho in August Juche 51 (1962). The DPRK has steadily laid solid foundations for ensuring maritime physical culture with swimming pools and water parks built throughout the country. With the start of this year's swimming season, every beach and swimming places including Majon and Songdowon beaches and Munsu Water Park are crowded with visitors. In particular, swimming is regarded as one of compulsory courses at schools of different levels. |
