Pyongyang, July 27 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung had paid deep attention to developing the nation's sports even in the thick of the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953). In August 1951 when the war was at its height, he dispatched a DPRK sports delegation, organized with servicepersons, to the World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin to show the mettle of the heroic Korean people. When the delegate returned home, he appreciated its members for their successes in the festival. Considering the sports development to be an important work related to the nation's honor, he made a decision to recall athletes from the front in order to organize a sports group in the Korean People's Army. To that effect, he issued Order No. 0644 in the name of the Supreme Commander on December 15, Juche 40 (1951). Days later, a meeting took place at the conference room of the Supreme Command to declare the organizing of the KPA Sports Group with some 100 servicepersons for 10 events including football, basketball and volleyball. On May 1, 1952, Kim Il Sung personally watched a match of the group's women volleyballers. He even called the athletes to take part in the military parade for celebrating the war victory. The feats he performed for sports development in the wartime will shine forever along with the war victory. |
